This piece features Bashmet with Oleg Kagan... kagan died shortly after this performance..

"As Kagan seemed to be approaching the zenith of his career he became seriously ill with cancer in 1989. He had several surgeries, but struggled to remain active, touring Europe when he could and arranging festivals. Though his doctors at a hospital in LübeckGermany, declared him too sick to be released, Kagan discharged himself to appear at his final festival, in Kreuth am TegernseeBavaria. Shortly after giving two Mozart concerts there, where he had to be helped on-stage, he died on July 15, 1990, not yet 44."(from wikipedia)

Great musician indeed. What is your favorite performance of him?

I'll agree that this is funny and well worth watching. I've actually seen it before.

Do you know of a good recording with Yuri not breaking a string that you would like to share with us?

I was just kidding. I like this one better. To me its why I like viola better than violin.

Reviving this old topic 🙂

So Yuri Bashmet is probably the reason I got to try viola in the first place. First encounter, I think, was in a CD track of him playing Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante with Anne-Sophie Mutter. I haven't heard any better version (to my ears), there's a level of intimacy between their two instruments and their playing, almost like a dance…

Anyway here it is :

1. Allegro   /   2. Andante   /   3. Presto

Of course, now I'm aware that I'll never get to that level 🙁

Browsing a bit on youtube, then, I found a few videos, one of my favs being the one you posted above @Scarecrow ... I like this one a lot too :

I don't know how he gets that sound. Well yes, it's called skill… (and tons of work, too)
