Études aren't like scales, other than the fact that they are used for practice. Usually, they are rather difficult, or focus on a specific playing skill.

The Hoffmeister Études make my head swim, just looking at them...

interesting !! So etudes are a skill building tool . I know Barry works on scales, I dont recall him ever mentioning etudes.

I dont work on them enough and I should add more technique type practice.

I'm guilty of not posting enough etudes. Etudes usually focus on aspects of technique and exaggerate them to enforce better and quicker learning of those particular techniques. For example one etude can contain trills on every note. Another can utilize chords and double stops. Sometimes it is hard to understand what the etude is trying to enhance in us and we must analyze it even more to figure it out.
