I came across this video, about adjusting the viola hold and left hand technique to your body, in order to stay relaxed and get better intonation and vibrato (especially 4th finger). I found it refreshing to listen to, and after trying it a bit, it does seem to help, so thought I'd share. I've been experimenting with different left hand positions for some time, and never been quite satisfied with mine, so I'll have to practice this and see. I'm optimistic about this.
@wtw I liked that. I will have to watch it a few more times. I can't understand or pick up what she is talking about as quickly as she is talking, LOL. I know that I don't really hold my viola correctly. I also have major issues with my 4th finger. It seems shorter in comparison to the ring finger than a lot of people, to me. It just has never felt like it belongs to my hand, either hand. When I took lessons, the instructor had one way to hold and finger and no adjustments could be made to accommodate. I figure, you need go accommodate physical features so you don't cause injury or strain.
