This thread is an index to cello lesson links and list of cello skill builder reference materials. There have been posts requesting cello help. I decided to try to create an index of links for cello lessons. If you wish to provide one, just reply with the link.

VIDEO LINK INDEX:

Cello.Org has some great information. I googled that on the Google the best position to learn on a cello, after 1st. Cello.org was one of the hits. What to learn after first position?

Cello.org

This YouTube link was provided by Ilona on 6/14/2020 post #6. It is series of YouTube Cello instructions by Ilia Laporev.

The link below will take you to 3rd position information, but use the menu bar and you will find all kinds of information.

The Cello Companion

The link below will take you to the fingerboard chart. Again, the menu bar will get you more information. The information is not just for cello. Check out the Cello Bow Strokes. It describes the different bowings and what they mean.

Cellopedia

If you Google Cellopedia, you will find a lot of videos by Cellopedia. This guy plays great and has a wonderful video format, as seen in the Chanson Triste. Here is a link to Cellopedia playing Chanson Triste, and Cellopedia doing the Suzuki books. The Suzuki link is for Book 1 Lightly Row. If you can find Cellopedia doing pretty much all of the Suzuki songs, if you google Cellopedia Suzuki.

Cello Talk

David Finckel has 100 Cell Talks that are absolutely the best! Here is a link to his page that lists them all so you can pick and choose. I bookmarked this link so I can always find it.

Sarah Joy: Offers many videos for cello.

Sarah Joy YouTube

Or search, Sarah Joy YouTube cello lessons. Sarah has many performance videos you can view for inspiration and encouragement, also.

Joseph Mendoes: Lesson links are available from his home page:

You can search Joseph Mendoes Youtube cello lessons, but they are easy to access with the provided link.

Strings Lessons

This webpage link has links to free video cello lessons from two instructors. I have just viewed a little of a couple of the lessons. You will also find links to many violin lessons on this page. These are all free videos.

CELLO POSITION/FINGERBOARD CHART

This is the best chart for cello positions I have found. It not only has place the different positions start, ie 1st pos, 5th pos, 7 pos, it also has the notes associated with the fingering. This is the only chart I found like this.

HARDCOPY REFERENCE MATERIAL

New 1/7/2022- Fourth Position for the Cello, by Cassia Harvey. This book is excellent for 4th position on the cello. the layout is great. The way 4th position is taught is makes complete sense, or at least for me. The pieces provided after each are well chosen and are as you would typically use 4th. They are not pieces that force you to shift when you shouldn't, just to have a shift. They flow nicely with the shift. Very well thought out book.

Also, it is not spiral bound, but it is bound is a "Soft Bund", as it is described. You can see a score line up the edge of the binding, about 1/4"  in. This allows you to open the book as needed to play, unlike most bound edge music books that keep wanting to close, unless you break the binding by forcing it flat. This is such a big bonus.

New 1/7/2022 - Fourth Position Study Method For Cello, by Cassia Harvey. This book is an addition to the Fourth Position for the Cello mentioned above. It gives you more discussion, more pieces to play. A great addition.

New 1/7/2022 - Third Position for the Cello, by Cassia Harvey. It ismrhe same isea as the Fourth Position for the Cello above.

I just want to let those student cellists out there that so far Cassia Harvey's is excellent. It is really helping me out. I am beginning to improve my first position intonation, because the exercises start there. It has made me loosen my thumb grip behind the neck because I have to slide up to fourth. I am beginning to hit the mark with 4th position just about all the time. The result of all of this, I am gaining more confident.

The book is listed in the Cello Lesson Links Index in the first post. It is listed in the bottom section for books.

Yesterday, I received two books I ordered. Both are by Cassia Harvey. Her 4th position is mentioned in the Index, in the Books Section.

I received the Fourth Position Study Method For cello, and the Third Position For Cello books by Cassia Harvey, yesterday. Today I received the Third Position Study Method for Cello.

After I have used them, I will write more about them. However, in browsing the 4th position study method, my initial thoughts are that this book is going to be extremely helpful. It explains how to do the fingering in fourth position in more detail, and there are more pieces that use fourth position to use these practices in. There is an explanation and diagram as to where to actually bow in relation to where you are on the fingerboard.

The Third Position for the Cello is similar to the fourth position for cello book, which I really like, as is the Study Method for third position.
