What is the correct string afterlength for a 16" viola?
Any help is appreciated

Most agree that a 1:6 ratio is a good place to start. From there you can experiment.

what's a 1:6 ratio? Perhaps I should also ask what is the after length? (google here I come)

Percentage of string length located on one side of the bridge vs the other.
For example if your string length was 12" on the fingerboard side you would want about 2" on the tailpiece side. This is just a starting point though. Very few instruments are set-up perfectly and it's not necessarily the best for your instrument.
