I'm such a n00b i thought the size was why they were played in the range they have until i started seeing small ones listed.  we'll see how mine turns out.  it's about the size of a violiin, I think. it's due in Monday!

Lol.  It happens. :)   One thing you must realize though is that a smaller instrument WILL have a "lighter" tone to it than a larger instrument.  And even though you may have a Viola that is the same length coming it will still have a deeper sound 1. because it uses 1 deeper string but also because the body of the viola is Wider than the body of the violin which gives it more space to resonate in. :D

So you are not entirely wrong or entirely right.

Hope everything goes well with the new instrument and we hope to see videos and and pictures done

I can tell you I took the plunge after seeing a fiddlerman video, then discovering this offshoot for viola, which I've long wanted to play.  I had enough reward points to get it for free!

Looks like there may be a need for players of  small violas to have our own portion of the Forum. I to expect to take delivery of  a 14" Cecilio CVA 500 on Monday or Tuesday. Being but 5'6" tall myself I have argued that taller people are just abnormal and so we with violin sized violas need to emphasize the normality of our fiddles.

What are you trying to say huh?? That because I am 6' 8" I am some kind of freak :D j/k :) I know I am a freak headbang

But I find it interesting that you feel the need to "justify" your smaller instruments sf-wink afro

I'm 5'6", and comfortable with 16" violas. However, I find a 16.5" manageable.

I've seen smaller people playing some of the larger-sized violas without a problem. I think it has more to do with your ability to stretch your fingers to fourth-finger positions and just getting accustomed to the larger reach and intonation positions.
