I have very little experence with bridges. Several things confuse me. How are bridges supposed to be shaped? Is there a difference in the shape of the bridge used for violin music and "fiddle" music or is this just silly? I understand that the bridge is lower on the E string side than on the G string side, but why is this? Also, every bridge I have ever seen has been shaped flat on the back side and shaped on the front side. Can we have a nice discussion on bridges - especially for us beginners?done

Some fiddle bridges have less  of an arch to them making it easier to play 2 strings at once.  The E string side or A string on a viola is loser because of the amplitude of the vibrations of the string. Play the C string or G in violin and you can see the movement in the string where as in the higher string the vibrations are smaller.  I don't know that there is a real reason why we shape the nut side of a bridge but it's  been done that way for a very long time and who am I to change it.
