The Bach Suite For Cello thread in Great Performances got me to thinking about the instrument the artist was playing.

I think I might like an electric (silent, anyway) instrument sometime in the future, myself. It would greatly expand my opportunities to practice here at home. Currently, I have to schedule my time so that it doesn't interfere with any other activities here in our small house, where the sound carries. I prefer to practice when nobody else is around...

The ability to practice silently (to everybody else, anyway) but still be able to hear myself has a lot appeal to me, and might mean that I could get in more playing time. It would also make recording much less of a logistical problem, as well.

For those who have experience with sorts of instruments, how "silent" are they? Any other concerns?

Electric solid body are very quiet but the player can easily hear it.  The problem I have with the electric is not plugging it in to an amp. The headphones work nice but I usually can't resist and end up plugging it in even if it'd to my little Honeytone.

I tried a Yamaha silent violin in a music store once. It was great, and quiet! The Yamaha silent instruments really are silent. If you want something that other people won't be able to hear, those are the right ones for you. You should see if you can try one out somewhere. :)

The only problem is they're kind of spendy. Cecilio unfortunately doesn't make electric violas. :(

I'll have to look up some specs on violas and see if I can come up with a design for an electrric viola.

Now that is an interesting idea Kevin. You should definitely do that. You if anyone could build one.

You certainly have an opportunity to enter a niche-market. Make a good one, and I'd bet you'd get a lot of interest from the viola community. Certainly from me, anyway. dance

Tommorow I´m heading to capital city to pick up my brand new, custom made electric viola! I´m beginner, but I got to make custom one, because no one sell them here. I´m so excited!excited

Yes, I'm anxious to see it, maybe even hear it, and hear all about it.

Keep us posted.
