It's no secret that I'm interested in the viola. I often said I dislike the E string on the violin and even play tuned down a bit to get a more darker, mellow sound. Not that I don't like violin, I love it, but I'm interested in trying a viola also. My budget is kinda low though. What is the lowest but playable viola I should save for?

I'd hate to see you give up the violin but if you really want to play the viola, the only ones that I know of that are playable for little money are the Cecilio.

NV, what about a five string violin.  This way you have the C string and the neck and size of the instrument is the same as what you are used to.

I really think you should go to a music store with many violins and test some out. Even better if you find a luthier with great instruments. The reason that I say this is because some violins have very shrill E strings which I cannot stand. Yours really seems to have that. If you test a darker or better sounding violin I don't think that you will be bothered by it.
Having said this, playing a viola is great fun as well. 🙂

Hi

I've just got my hands on a viola and am looking forward to taming it. However, there is no way I'm giving up on the fiddle. There is room for both ;)
