Hi All
Will getting ack on the viola soon. It's off the wall :)

Was tuning and broke the A string and having spent a fair bit of money on 'things stringed' of late, I decided to just buy a Pirastro A

Great, it arrived and was fitted and tuned. All OK

I straight away noted the that the D was sounding more like a G and went to tune it.
As soon as I moved the peg.... 'Ping'. Now no D https://violaman.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_sad.gif

So I've ordered a set of D'addarios and will knock out a tune or two when they arrive.

Also... I felt that the viola was sounding a bit dull and even 'muddy' on the G. On closer inspection I noticed that the sound post was about three SPs aft of the bridge. If it where a violin I'd say that was way too far aft but with a viola, I'm not totally sure.

What do you reckon folks?

Sounds like it's too far aft. I would move it closer. Just make sure that the bridge is in the right spot first. :-)

Yes. I thought that it might come to this https://violaman.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif

It's not like I'm doing it to my Raggetti. [Image Can Not Be Found]

I'm not really fond of moving sound posts. Have done it before but I I Don't feel at all competent in doing it. But you can't 'really' hurt anything except have your sound post in the wrong place. I'll give it a try https://violaman.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif

Barry. I reckon that the 'smiley' part of the website should be 'reviewed'.

John, I dont know anything about emoticons, hopefully Pierre can add some more from fiddlerman on here when he gets time.

Bach : As the greatest expert and judge of harmony, he liked best to play the viola, with appropriate loudness and softness

Hi Toni. They where cheapy strings. Time to replace them anyway :)

Can't wait to get back into it. [Image Can Not Be Found]

Do you think that you will be needing a smaller size one?

thank you Barry.

@Ferret / John. I think I will just need the full sized one. 16 inch? I have long arms and big hands.

If you want to play both the viola and violin you may want a 15.5, I'd even say 15" but the sound of a bigger instrument is worth that half inch extra. Then again, I don't know just how big your your hands are. Just saying.
14" equals the size of a violin.

Thank you Pierre. I need that kind of input. I am out for the big sound.. but also want to be able to play both instruments. (main focus will always be the violin).... Well those could be my famous last words.... you never know.

Hand size. If I put my hand spread on an 8.5 x 11 piece of paper, the thumb and little finger can almost touch both edges. Maybe it isn't that big...maybe just big for a lady?

Do you spread it a lot? My thumb and pinky extend beyond about 1" when well spread and I still wouldn't want a big viola, unless I was switching to viola and not playing the fiddle anymore. Barry on the other hand is so big that he is more comfortable on the viola. Barry playing the 4/4 violin probably feels similar to me playing a 3/4 or 1/2 size violin.

I will keep that in mind Pierre.
Going to do the VSO viola conversion for a bit. And since I am just starting to get a good groove with my violin.. I will get a smaller Viola when the time comes.

If I try to spread really wide, it is about 1/4 inch off the sides of the 8.5 in paper. But still I don't want to mess up my violin playing....
But I can't resist trying viola.. :)

Actually, I take that back, a big viola can have an incredible sound. Hard to beat with a smaller size viola.

I found posts 9-12 contains a lot of terrific information for people wanting to learn violin and viola. Makes complete sense.

Thanks.
