This is Carnatic Music (South Indian Music) piece rendered by Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna, an eminent singer.  Viola is his second love.  He is now 80+.

Thanks for sharing that video. It shows that "classical" music can have many meanings.

 

I have this sudden urge to break out some Tabla and "sing the bols."

As you can see, this Viola hold(and the violin hold) facilitates sliding which is an essential part of Carnatic Music.  It gives what is known as gamakam(graces, shakes and glides) effect. The percussion instruments are 'mridangam' and 'Ghatam'.

Thanks for that last link. There were so many different musical techniques listed my head began to swim. Clearly this style of music is vastly more complex than I would have imagined.
