about a year ago when I first considered viola, I looked around the web for a viola forum as well as sites dedicated to viola. they are very few to be found and no real forums. Most piggy back on the violin sites.

Im really looking forward to a year from now to see the growth here once word gets around.

note

Bach : As the greatest expert and judge of harmony, he liked best to play the viola, with appropriate loudness and softness

Pierre said it took a year to get Fiddlerman.com off the ground, so your estimation should be about right, provided we all keep this place active.

I'm glad you're here, Barry!

Me too. Should be exciting if this spreads. Violist will love having their own forum provided they can find it. Need to get google search hits too for users to find this site.

I know some sites like all things strings and even the fiddle hangout have sub groups for viola. I know of none dedicated just to viola except this one, so Im sure once word gets out and search engines find it ,it will grow.

I am no expert.  Have you created a backlink?  I don't know how to create it.  Try to create a backlink with fiddlerman.com.

I thought I would take a walk on the dark side.

I do have a question however.  I see violas in so many different lengths.  What is the most common or standard length?

Are the smaller ones, the ones about the size of a violin for kids?

Great question Kevin,

I'm no expert but I know that the bigger the Viola the better is sounds. The problem is that it becomes difficult to play when it is too big. I think they exist up to around 21 maybe 22" but you would need to be a Giant to play on one.

The most common size appears to be between 15,5 to 16,5 inches.
These instruments are big are easy enough to play and have a decent sound. I ordered the 16" when Cecilio sent me mine.

is the neck on a viola wider, which to me might make it easier to play with arthritc hands

The neck is thicker but I don't know by how much. You may need slightly more pressure though Kevin, though you could always use lower tension strings.
