Hey Guys,

I'm looking for ideas on the first page. The landing page for this site. Should be something that will draw people to stay and become interested in hanging out.

Any ideas would be appreciated :-)

The front page is easy.

Just have a button (with embedded link) that reads: "Click here to transfer to the Fiddlerman website."

Or, another suggestion, a button that reads: "WRONG WAY, GO BACK"

By the way, I regret that for me (using this local IT system in Danmark) there appears to be (at the moment) no method for attaching scores (jpg, pdf, etc) to the Share Sheet Music topics. It is apparent from other postings that this feature used to work in the past, and I do not know if anything went wrong in the meantime to stop the former functionality.

However, back to the original question, I am thinking about trying to get some ideas.

"Featured Youtube viola video of the day/week." ?

Suggestions for some famous films about violas that will never be made ?

"Take the viola and run"

"Everything you wanted to know about violas but were afraid to ask"

"Violas and death"

"Vicky Christina Barcelona Viola"

"The Purple Viola of Cairo"

"An American Viola in Paris"

"Citizen Viola"

"Gone With the Viola"

"Viola vs Viola"

"The Viola Who Came to Dinner"

"The Shawshank Viola"

"The Magnificent Seven Violas"

"Once Upon a Viola in the West"

"The Planet of the Violas"

"The Violas of Navarone"

"From Russia with Viola"

"Violas Only Live Twice"

"On Her Majesty´s Secret Viola"

LOL,

Good stuff. Thanks. Have you tried uploading anything recently? Let me know what you are trying to upload, size and type of file and I'll investigate.

At the moment I have just clicked the button "Add Reply". I am typing in the editor for Add Reply: New Front Page.

There is tool bar across the header of the input box, with various formatting options and kitchen sink etc.

Across the footer of the input box there is "Path: p"

Then there is "Math Required"

What is the sum of 5+1

Lastly there is "Preview" "Cancel" "Do Math to Save"

There is no button for "Attach file" or "Upload" etc.

It is beginning to seem if this is not a universal problem, so don´t worry about it. It may not affect other users. It may only be something local at my end (although I think it happens with more than one computer around here in Danmark)

(Edit, sorry to answer your specific question... I think I wanted to upload a .pdf of either a viola version of The Irish Washerwoman out of MuseScore or a modified expanded and slower paced (using quavers in place of Sitt´s semi-quavers) viola fingering exercise for trills from Sitt (Exercise #31, at half the speed in the original book and with the shortened trills written out in full. I used the word "wanted" because at this end there is no way of "trying". The size of the .pdf file in that Sitt instance was 18KB, but if I extended it to a full page it would become about 36KB, or two pages about 70KB.)

I think the Home page of Violaman should essentially mirror the Fiddlerman site.

Perhaps a brief introduction with links to the most pertinent pages/news items, along with an introduction video from Pierre.

agree with the head cheese

Bach : As the greatest expert and judge of harmony, he liked best to play the viola, with appropriate loudness and softness

Check out my screenshot and let me know if you have the same thing when replying to a post:
Note that the "Attachments" icon are under the post text section.

At the bottom of the screen there are three buttons, viz:

Preview    Cancel     Do the Math

The three buttons:    Smileys    Options    Attachments      are missing.

When I enter the mathematical sum, the Do the Math button changes to a "Submit  Reply" button, and there are still no three buttons Smileys Options Attachments (they are missing here, on this computer and also missing on one other unrelated library computer in Danmark, I have not tested all computers in Danmark, but be warned there is something rotten in Danmark).

I have tried clicking in the region of the page where the Attachments button should be, even though it is invisible, to no effect.

(Follow up information: It occurred to me to mention that in Fiddlerman the attachment feature works for me as it should, it is just in Violaman that I experience the problem (for me).)

I don't know why that is but I made you a regular member (members who have made over 99 posts) to see if that solves anything. Regular members don't need to do the math. :-)

Oh, now that I am (temporarily) a regular member I have two of the three missing buttons: viz Smileys and Attachments.

I think the remaining missing button should be: Options and I can do without Options I guess. Are there "Über members" who have the Options - maybe moderators or administrators ?

While this is working, and before I go back to being a non-regular member (which sounds better and is more in keeping with the reject status of violas in certain quarters), I will try to attach the exercise "No more fly away fingers" (for violas) to this, and see what happens.

I will also try to attach an incompletely scored and converted/modified trilling exercise from Sitt Bratschenschule. I have not made the time to complete the Sitt to the end yet. There are another dozen or so bars of it, the empty bars you should notice... There are two reasons for slowing it down. One reason is that for beginners if it is written out in full eliminating the original trill notation it is then easier to read what is supposed to happen/be played. The second reason is that at full speed MuseScore cannot play it correctly in the replay mode (I think it goes too fast for the software ? Or alternatively, at full speed I cannot hear via MuseScore what is happening in the trills).

If there are mistakes, or any suggestions for improvements, or if I should put in the fingering in full or add something else (some of the fingering I am unsure about what would be correct), someone may let me know.

I would expect that some of these attachments would be sorted into some other part of the website to find their proper location, if they are acceptable.

(A short time later)

It does this to me, both when using OS /flash player dragging method and when using the alternative uploader dialog box:

File extension error.
File: No_more_fly_away_fingers.pdf

It also does the same with the Sitt .pdf and with the MuseScore native versions of the music files for Fly Away Fingers and Sitt 31.

(An hour later, edit.)

File extension error.
File: No_more_fly_away_fingers.mscz

That is to show that the behaviour is the same with a MuseScore mscz file.

I have an e-mail address as satnene (at) gmail.com and if someone in the administration likes I can e-mail the two (or four) files to them from that address so that the administration person can place the files whereever they like if they like on the website (presumably under sheet music or exercises or something like that)

LOL Donald.
First of all, not temporary, secondly, I need your help to solve the mystery of why you can't post attachments.

What Browser and OS are you using? I realize that you might have told me earlier but I don't remember.

PS, I'm happy to have you here, we need active members here such as yourself if this forum is ever going to take off.

Swallows-P8050038.JPGImage EnlargerTo Pierre,

I have no qualms about being a temporary member or a non-member or a regular member. But a non-regular member (or regular non-member) sounds about right for all violists.

This is a Lenovo ThinkPad which I think has Windows 7. It has both Windows Internet Explorer and Google Chrome. Normally I use Google Chrome, but for an experiment I am currently using Internet Explorer right now to see what happens.

Warning: There are other programmes running in the background (I am not sure what they are, but they include Adobe Flash Player, prossibly some others are sabotage committed by roaming disturbed violinists.)

Results:

I can log in.

I can commence replies.

I can see the Smileys and Attachments buttons.

Wait for it while I see....

Oh, it lets me upload a .jpg image, but it still will not let me upload Adobe Acrobat .pdf files and will not let me upload MuseScore .mscz files

The way to possibly work around that would be to ascertain if MuseScore allows music scores to be saved in the format of .jpg files or some other Violaman supported image type. But it would be better in the long run if people could exchange MuseScore native files, because then not only do you get the music score, you get the functionality of being able to change and adapt it, along with the functionality of being able to get it played back to you by the computer automatically, something which I do not think you can do with .jpg files of music scores.

There is a section lower down the screen that clarifies that .pdf and .mscz files are not among the supported filetypes. So I was trying to get the software to do something it is not designed to do, hence it was not working.

This is something that I have full control over. For some reason their is a way to add OTHER files allowed and they don't even show up here. I now changed the media files to allow pdf and mscz
Give it a shot now. The only problem is how this forum will read those files.

Uploading two files saved as .pdf files

Oh, this did not work, after attaching the two .pdf files, I clicked Submit Reply, and the next thing I saw was a message appeared on the screen:

Method Not Implemented

POST to /index.php not supported.

I can see the files but they don't display on the post except for links to the files.

Strange with the pdf display though. I'll research this as well.
